With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday 8 May, we thought it would be helpful to gather a few gift ideas for the mother-figure in your life.

GOOD BOOKS SUBSCRIPTIONS

What’s more exciting than getting a parcel of good reading in the mail every month? Nothing, we reckon! So treat Mum to a GOOD BOOKS Subscription and give the gift of reading for six or 12 months!

We’ll start by emailing her a Reading Preferences Questionnaire. Using that information, the GOOD BOOKS team will put our heads together and carefully select books we’re sure she’ll love. In the first week of each month, we’ll send her a gift-wrapped book with a personalised note.

Find out more or buy online here.

New GOOD BOOKS

In fiction, Young Mungo is the brand-new novel from Douglas Stuart (he won the 2020 Booker Prize for Shuggie Bain); Lessons in Chemistry is a terrific light-but-smart read about a singular woman who is both scientist and mother; The Language of Food is a beautiful novel for mothers who like cooking and history; and Beats of the Pa’u is a brilliant collection of short stories set in Porirua.

In non-fiction, the beloved local writer Fiona Kidman has just released a memoir about being a grandmother, a widow and more (and similar themes can be found in the new poetry collection from Maggie Rainey-Smith); there’s the zany story of a bookseller who runs two tiny bookshops in the remote village of Manapouri in Fiordland; the author of My Brilliant Friend has a collection of essays about reading; a small book that packs a punch about how to approach our difficult local histories; and a lovely gift book called Philosophy for Gardeners.

Or you could grab a few books from this year’s Ockham NZ Book Awards finalists, ahead of the announcement of the winners in mid-May.

OTHER GIFT IDEAS

We have a gorgeous range of jigsaw puzzles. Our super-cool, high-quality, exclusive GOOD BOOKS T-shirts are on special for only $12 (limited sizing remains)! And there’s always a GOOD BOOKS Gift Voucher, which can be redeemed either in-store or online.
